DownloadUrban Street Designs was appointed to manufacture a stainless steel retaining tree protector measuring 1080mm dia. x 600mm high that would allow raised planting beds to be incorporated into the landscape, whilst importantly protecting the roots of an established tree on site.
When soil or any type of fill is placed over an existing root system, it causes a reduction in the oxygen supply to the tree roots and slows down the rate of gas exchange between the roots and the air in the soil pore space. By installing the retaining protector around the circumference of the trunk, it allowed levels to be raised without compromising the life longevity of a healthy tree.
Additional design features included an external joining plate to give additional strength and multiple connection points, 16mm x 150mm stainless steel studs around the perimeter of the base to aid the concrete footing to key to the Retaining Tree Protector. Perforated Plastic Pipe was installed by the landscape contractor under the root bed for additional drainage and oxygen source.
